Total Compensation and Benefits for Surrogates

At Joy of Life, we provide our surrogate mothers with the best experience possible throughout each phase of their journey. That includes fair, transparent compensation that reflects the time, care and commitment surrogacy requires.

Depending on experience, location and other factors, surrogates with Joy of Life typically receive between $60,000 and $99,000 in total compensation, including base pay, bonuses and monthly allowances. Every dollar you earn is clearly outlined before you begin.

Base Compensation Breakdown

Base compensation is the payment you receive for carrying the pregnancy, before any bonuses or reimbursements. Your starting rate depends on your experience and where you live.

Our base rates at Joy of Life are:

  • $70,000 for experienced surrogates living in California
  • $55,000 for experienced surrogates living outside California
  • $60,000 for first-time surrogates living in California
  • $45,000 for first-time surrogates living outside California

Surrogates may also receive up to $34,000 in additional bonuses and allowances depending on experience, employment status during the journey and other factors. Your coordinator will walk you through exactly what to expect at each step.

100% Covered Travel Reimbursements

We understand that surrogacy sometimes requires travel. That’s why we ensure any necessary travel never feels like an extra cost burden. All of your travel-related costs are fully covered — both in-state and out-of-state — so you can focus entirely on your well-being during pregnancy.

Inconvenience & Wage Loss Reimbursement

At Joy of Life, we also provide coverage for unexpected inconveniences that may come up during your surrogacy journey. If medical complications, wage loss or childcare needs arise, we have safeguards in place to make sure you’re not left shouldering those costs on your own.

Once your legal contract is signed, if circumstances beyond your control prevent the journey from continuing, any medically necessary procedures related to the pregnancy, including a D&C if needed, will be fully covered as outlined in your agreement. You’ll also receive the appropriate compensation specified in your contract.

Surrogates with Joy of Life typically earn between $60,000 and $100,000 in total compensation, depending on experience, location and journey-specific factors.

A few things that can push your total toward the higher end:

  • Prior surrogacy experience — experienced surrogates start at a higher base rate
  • Living in California, where base compensation reflects the state’s cost of living
  • Qualifying for additional bonuses, such as those tied to a successful first transfer, C-section delivery or multiple births
  • Reimbursements for travel, childcare and wage loss accumulated throughout your journey

Will I have to pay for any medical or hospital bills?

No. All medical, legal and pregnancy-related expenses are fully covered by the intended parents — not by you. At Joy of Life, we coordinate with your intended parents, their insurance and your medical providers so that nothing comes out of your pocket. Everything is spelled out in your surrogacy contract before the journey begins, so you always know exactly where you stand.

Is my surrogate compensation guaranteed?

Yes, absolutely. We’re proud to say our Surrogate Benefits Package is fully transparent, so you know exactly what you’ll receive and when.

Before your journey begins, your compensation is deposited into an independent escrow account managed by a neutral third party. Funds are released on a clear schedule tied to the milestones in your legal contract, so your pay is secured before the embryo transfer even takes place. We’ll also work closely with you each month to track your compensation every step of the way.
